Keynote Speech by Mr. Wang Jun: AI Enables Future Traffic

2024-04-22952

On April 18, Mr. Wang Jun, General Manager of ITS Product R&D at Dahua Technology, delivered a keynote speech at Intertraffic Amsterdam 2024, providing insights into Dahua's vision for intelligent transportation, milestone achievements, and pioneering solutions that address road safety, efficiency, and operations.

Embracing the AI Evolution of ITS

In his speech, Mr. Wang emphasized the vital role of foundation models and generative AI in impacting daily life and global industries. Highlighting the company's dedication to harnessing the power of AIoT, Mr. Wang presented the milestone events that have shaped the development of the company's intelligent traffic technologies. From pioneering advancements in the industry's first embedded high-definition all-in-one camera to breakthroughs in AI-enabled detection devices, Dahua has transformed traffic equipment from "visible" to "clear", and finally to "understandable", continuously leading the forefront of the industry.

“In recent years, Dahua has been continuously exploring the field of ITS, including introducing advanced AI and big data technologies into the transportation field. To date, we have developed a complete set of full-service ITS solutions covering urban parking, integrated traffic management, signal control, etc., and become a leading ITS brand,” said Mr. Wang.

Subsequently, Mr. Wang outlined Dahua's insights into major industry challenges during its years of exploration. With the continuous growth of population, vehicles and urbanization, today's cities and towns around the world have given rise to multiple demands in terms of violation regulation, road maintenance and management modes.

Enhance traffic safety, efficiency, and operation

In response to customer pain points, Mr. Wang said: “We have utilized AIoT capabilities to develop dedicated technologies and applications around traffic safety, traffic efficiency, and traffic operations to address challenges facing the industry, aligning with our mission of enabling a smarter society and better living.”

Focusing on road safety, Mr. Wang emphasized: “For many years, we have been paying close attention to traffic safety issues. By utilizing deep learning algorithms, we have developed smart devices for demanding scenarios such as intersections, pedestrians, etc. They can help identify illegal loading of trucks, not giving way to pedestrians, and many types of traffic violations, thereby improving people's travel safety. In particular, we have developed SPC (Spectrum cut-off) technology to help regulate driving behavior. This technology reduces light pollution while improving the capture accuracy of daytime in-vehicle violations by at least 80%."

“On the other hand, we use AI to empower the front-end camera to realize early warning of safety hazards, such as highway traffic congestion, illegal parking, tunnel fires, heavy fog weather, and so on. At present, Dahua's AI cameras can automatically recognize more than 20 types of abnormal events, with some events having an accuracy rate of over 90%. For traffic managers, once these abnormal events are detected, they can use various warning methods to remind drivers, thereby reducing safety risks.”

In the realm of traffic efficiency, Mr. Wang highlighted Dahua's intelligent signal control systems, which dynamically adapt to traffic patterns to optimize signal timings and minimize congestion at intersections.

“The optimization of signal timing is based on accurate detection and analysis of traffic data. We have a radar fusion camera that deeply integrates video data with multi-dimensional data from millimeter wave radar through AI algorithms. This device can achieve all-weather, ultra-long-distance lane-level accurate traffic flow detection, with a detection accuracy of up to 99% and a detection distance of up to 350 meters. Thus, our AI big data signal control optimization platform can better achieve comprehensive congestion management, truly shifting from experience-based congestion management to data-based congestion management.”

Addressing road operations, Mr. Wang introduced Dahua's innovative approaches to urban parking, highway tolling and road maintenance.

“Dahua's smart parking solution enables real-time detection of parking spaces and unified parking toll management. In collaboration with partners, we jointly developed unmanned dynamic weighing and tolling solutions through precise license plate recognition. It allows non-stop weighing and tolling for vehicles, avoiding congestion and disruptions to normal traffic operations. In response to road maintenance challenges, Dahua has introduced AI cameras to accurately identify road defects in real-time, enabling managers to intervene and maintain in a timely manner, eliminate safety hazards, and ensure the sustainable operation of roads."

Three key elements shaping future traffic

According to Mr. Wang, future traffic systems will mainly feature three characteristics: service-centric, all-factor, and open sharing.

“First, using AI technology to accurately identify safety hazards and promptly remind drivers of related risks, shifting traffic management from post-punishment to pre-warning. This is service-centric.

Second, all-factor. It means deploying roadside AI intelligent detection devices to achieve comprehensive sensing and integration of all traffic-related elements such as people, vehicles, and roads, achieving more efficient and accurate traffic management.

Third, building an open and shared digital traffic system by leveraging AI and big data technologies to achieve intelligent fusion and matching of image and data, providing more possibilities for traffic governance.”

"On the path towards an AI-enabled future, Dahua will always be a practitioner of AIoT, delving deeply into the ITS sector, and collaborating with various ecosystem partners to deliver personalized, intelligent products and end-to-end solutions for traffic management customers worldwide. We will continuously assist customers to unlock new possibilities in traffic management, enabling cities to optimize their infrastructure, enhance safety, and improve the overall quality of urban life," Mr. Wang concluded.
